Admission Requirements

Master’s degree in one of the following fields, with a strong background in psychology:

  • Psychology, sociology, social work or related field.
  • Art education.
  • Fine arts.
  • Completion of 100 hours of volunteer or professional experience in a helping role in an educational and/or human services setting.
  • Psychology prerequisite coursework (18 quarter/12 semester credits) — abnormal psychology, developmental psychology and theories of personality. Courses in professional ethics and research methods are recommended.
  • Art prerequisite coursework (23 quarter/15 semester hours) — both two- and three-dimensional media such as ceramics, metalsmithing, painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.
  • Portfolio of 20 slides that demonstrates multiple media competencies.
  • Two letters of recommendation: one from a professional with mental health credentials who has supervised you in a practical counseling-related experience, and one from an instructor of a psychology or counseling course who can assess your potential as a graduate student. If you have not enrolled in a college course for several years, two letters may be submitted from professional supervisors.
  • Writing sample: If selected for an interview, applicants will be asked to compose an essay during the interview visit.

Admission Essay Instructions

Submit a typewritten, double-spaced essay with your application. Please write a one- to two-page response for each of the following questions and clearly number your response to each question.

  1. In what ways has your academic and practical experience prepared you for becoming a counselor/art therapist? What do you see as your potential strengths and areas of growth as a counselor/therapist?
  2. How do you see your life history and personal experience contributing to your desire to become a counselor/art therapist? Have you engaged in your own personal counseling/therapy? If so, do you see this as an important component toward becoming an effective counselor/art therapist?
  3. In your view, what are the connections between the creative processes of visual art and cognitive, emotional and psychological functioning?
