The certificate program in Forensic Psychology prepares licensed psychologists to conduct evaluations competently with families involved in family or juvenile court because of disputes about custody arrangements or termination of parental rights. Participants in this program complete three full evaluations under the consultation of Dr. Andy Benjamin and in consultation with other students in the Psy.D. program's Forensic Concentration. Specifically, psychologists learn a published, standards-based process as well as procedures with actual clients through the Parenting Evaluation/Training Program (PETP).

This program is designed for psychologists living outside the King, Pierce and Snohomish county areas with intensive two-day workshops and seminar participation, as well as case consultation provided through internet-based videoconferencing. The two-day, weekend intensive workshop covers the forensic protocol taught by the Parent Evaluation/Training Program. Completion of the workshop portion of the training program is followed by weekly consultation sessions offered concurrently with the Psy.D. program's Forensic Concentration professional seminar. A certificate of completion is presented upon completion of the two-day intensive workshops, the year-long consultation and three forensic evaluations.

What Participants Had to Say

"I found the Legal & Ethical Issues of Parent Evaluation course with Dr. Benjamin to be very informative, organized, and directly applicable to this highly litigious and challenging work. Dr. Benjamin was able to break down the Parenting Evaluation process into components that could be readily understood. This is quite an accomplishment given that these evaluations are considered one of the most complicated of forensic matters to address in a legal setting. Dr. Benjamin outlines the steps in the evaluation process in such a way that the trainee feels more competent and confident in his/her ability to conduct Parenting Evaluations even if the participant has never completed an evaluation of this nature. I would highly recommend Dr. Benjamin's course and consultation if consideration is being given to practicing in this arena. In fact, I believe such a training and/or certification program should be mandatory prior to the evaluator being allowed to conduct a Parenting Evaluation."
