Why choose Antioch’s master’s program in Strategic Communication?
Antioch’s M.A. in Strategic Communication is designed for students who want to learn to use communication to advance creative social change. Based on the understanding that effective communication is what makes successful change agents, this program prepares students to communicate their ideas persuasively. By looking at communication as a systemic process, students learn to frame issues so they resonate with different groups within society.

What are the benefits of an M.A. in Strategic Communication?
As a Strategic Communication student, you learn to communicate more effectively with others to help create a better society wherever you are – in an organization, a nonprofit or community group, or a business. You combine the most recent ideas about communications with practical media know-how. You develop exceptional communication skills, including listening, negotiating, facilitating and advocacy. You are familiar with different types of media – including websites, print, radio, blogs, video, graphics and live performance – and you acquire the skills to use them to communicate your message.

Why Strategic Communication and not journalism or technical communication?
Antioch’s M.A. in Strategic Communication focuses on the skills to communicate effectively for change. Its emphasis on designing and implementing communication strategies contrasts with many graduate degrees in journalism or technical communication that focus on a narrow set of skills and competencies.

As information technology advances at warp speed, graduates of these conventional programs often find themselves with obsolete credentials and must enroll in post-graduate training courses to keep pace.

Do I need communications experience?
You’ll need at least two years of relevant work experience to enroll in the Strategic Communication program. However, this condition is broadly interpreted, and students in the program come from a variety of backgrounds.

In what career directions can my M.A. in Strategic Communication take me?
Graduates of the Strategic Communication program can develop careers in many different areas including broadcasting and journalism, management and leadership, education and teaching, media and communications consulting, advocacy and activism, and facilitation and mediation.

How long does it take to complete an M.A. in Strategic Communication?
If you enroll as a full-time student, you can finish your degree in 21 months. If you enroll part time, you have up to six years to finish your degree. There is also a graduate certificate in Effective Communication Strategies that can take only nine months to complete.

Is there a thesis requirement?
There is no thesis requirement for the M.A. in Strategic Communication but students may choose to write a thesis in their second year of study with their adviser’s approval.

How much does it cost?
An M.A. in Strategic Communication is a real asset. Costs are competitive with equivalent degrees at other private universities. See Typical Costs for more information. Most students receive financial aid. Antioch also offers graduate assistant and work study positions. Scholarships are available as well.

Can I work while I’m going to graduate school?
Yes, most students in the Strategic Communication program have full-time or part-time jobs. Class time is concentrated to accommodate busy schedules. All courses are offered one weekend a month (Friday through Monday). Between class meetings, students work online in a collaborative learning community.
