Core Faculty, Center for Creative Change

Summary of Education and Relevant Experience

Mark HowerB.A., Whitman College; M.S., Antioch University Seattle; currently a Ph.D. student in Antioch's Leadership and Change Program
Mark Hower recently returned to a core faculty position with the Center for Creative Change after serving a year as the interim President for Antioch University Seattle. He was the Special Assistant to the President for three years prior to the interim President position and also taught part time in the Center for Creative Change, particularly in leadership courses and the Reflective Practicum 2 series. Hower joined the Graduate Management faculty in 2000, served as chair and program director and was one of the founding faculty members involved with developing the Center for Creative Change and its integrated curriculum.

Hower brings considerable international experience to all of his work, seeking to understand how the organizations, communities and societies formed under the assumptions and paradigms of a dominant American culture are compelled to change by the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly evolving world of today. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone West Africa, Hower directed a U.N. sponsored water-wells construction program. He later held several Peace Corps staff positions, including coordinating the initial entry of Peace Corps programs in Ukraine, the Baltic States and Russia. He was also the Country Director of the Peace Corps program in the Kingdom of Tonga in the Pacific.

In collaboration with Barbara Spraker, Hower is co-founder of the Global Issues and Perspectives speakers series, hosted monthly by the Center for Creative Change.

On Interest Area

"I am passionate about discovering insights into how individuals, organizations and societies construct meaning and effectively organize themselves. I never cease to be amazed at the ingenuity, creativity and resilience of the human mind and spirit. The emerging global community, with its challenges and opportunities, make this perhaps the most critical moment in human history. A notion both inspiring and intimidating, I want to be an active participant in creating the response to these conditions. "

On Teaching at Antioch

"What strikes me about this institution is that each student is assumed to bring important knowledge and experience into the classroom. Students are not seen as an "empty vessel," to be filled up with the wisdom of faculty experts. Your previous experiences and evolving ideas are an integral part of the learning process – your own learning and that of your peers. I can be confident that in every class, each conversation with students, I will gain some new idea or deeper insight."
