Student Teaching is Integral to Your Learning

Becoming a teacher requires hard work and commitment to making a difference in the lives of students. When you join one of Antioch's teacher preparation cohorts, you will be closely guided and assessed during all field experiences. You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to lead a successful teaching career.

Antioch's student teachers are placed in public schools that have diverse student populations with excellent mentor teachers. There are one week observational periods during the teacher preparation phase, followed by a ten-week student teaching experience.

Antioch partners with schools in Seattle, Everett and Tacoma. In Seattle, elementary school partnerships include Adams, Green Lake and Roxhill, with James Madison as the middle school partner.

Experience the Full Support of Antioch Faculty and Partnering Schools

During student teaching, you create lesson plans that address the state learning goals for various grade levels. You will participate as an intern in the daily life of a classroom teacher, including attending faculty meetings, committee work and parent conferences. You will be assigned a university supervisor who will observe you at least once a week and meet with you to discuss your progress on the Pedagogy Assessment Tool.

The Center for Programs in Education can also assist you in obtaining the special education endorsement by providing a three-credit internship in special education as part of your student teaching experience.

When you finish student teaching, you will complete your endorsement portfolio. When all required student teaching documents are submitted, documenting that you have met the state and university competencies, you will be issued a temporary K-8 teaching permit by Antioch's certification officer, Rita Hunter.
