What kind of work could I do with a degree focused in arts and literature?
Students work in a variety of fields upon graduation. Some continue their professional work while others start new employment in industries such as publishing, screenwriting, editing, art design or managing fine arts organizations. Yet, there are still others who decide to work for themselves or continue their studies in graduate school.

Do I study arts or literature under this area of concentration or do I study both?
Essentially students study both; however, their interests may lean toward one or the other as they develop their focus. We encourage students to develop a broad understanding of theories and practices across several fields across arts and literature. At the same time, students guide their degree to develop their area of interest.

Who teaches the courses?
All our classes are taught by experienced teachers who are working professionals in their fields. Our faculty includes award-winning poets, critics, sculptors, screenwriters and more.

Are there opportunities to gain real world experience while I am in school?
Yes, there are many opportunities to gain real world experience both at the university and in the community. To start, Antioch publishes a literary arts magazine twice a year called KNOCK. Students can work on this magazine for credit. Outside Antioch, many students do internships or apprenticeships focused on a variety of activities including publishing, journalism, public relations, art therapy and collaborative writing. In addition, these opportunities provide a great way to network in the arts communities.

I have prior experience in this concentration. Can I document it for credit?
Yes, we have had poets, artists, musicians, painters, film writers and authors who have written about the learning gained from their past work for college credit. To learn more about this, check out Writing from Life Experience.

Can I use courses I've taken at other institutions to meet the requirements of this concentration?
Yes. Students transfer in previous course work taken at community colleges and at other universities. Students may also transfer in arts and literature based courses that may have been taken at specialized or technical institutions.

Can I complete more than one academic concentration?
Students sometimes find it desirable to complete a second area of concentration. In this case, only 35 credits are required as a minimum for the additional area.

How many credits are required in this academic concentration?
Regardless of whether you choose individualized or structured learning, your academic concentration requires a minimum of 45 credits, although students often earn more credits than this in their area of specialization.

How long does it take to complete my undergraduate degree?
Most students graduate from the B.A. completion program in two years or less. Completion of 180 quarter credits is required for graduation. These may include transcript credits from other colleges and universities, Antioch University credits and prior learning credits earned through Antioch's prior learning program. You must enroll for a minimum of four quarters and at least 36 current learning credits to get your liberal arts degree from Antioch.
