Antioch Seattle Offers New Master's Degree Programs With Native Focus at Muckleshoot Tribal College

New First Peoples' master's degree programs in management, strategic communication, environment and community, organizational psychology and whole systems design will be offered at the Muckleshoot Tribal College in Auburn starting in October 2008.

Antioch University Seattle's Center for Creative Change will provide the programs, which focus on issues relevant to Native people and are designed for students who plan to work in tribal communities. The priority deadline for applications is August 1.

Building on a common core of shared courses, each program offers a rigorous curriculum leading to a degree that brings new skills and perspectives to work and life. Students and faculty collaborate across traditional program boundaries in their research, coursework and community projects.

Jessica Porter, current student in the master's in organizational psychology program and member of the Chinook Indian Nation, says, "We not only create theories about how our area of interest could be of use to our communities, but we get to test our theories through applied practice within our communities and organizations. In turn, we get to find out what worked and what didn't, which leads us to creating new ways of thinking, being and doing."

Antioch University Seattle has offered education degree programs at the Muckleshoot Tribal College since 2002. The First Peoples' Education program includes a B.A. completion with teacher preparation, graduate teacher preparation and a master's in education, all with a Native focus. The next education cohort begins July 2008, with a priority application deadline of May 1.
