Position Summary

The Director of the B.A. in Liberal Studies degree completion program holds an administrative appointment with faculty status and provides visionary, collaborative leadership for an undergraduate degree completion program for working adults. The program offers individualized study as well as structured concentrations in arts and literature, global studies, human services, leadership and organizational studies, psychology, social justice studies, collaboration, diversity and whole-person, transformative learning. Students enter the program with a wide range of backgrounds; some are recent graduates of two-year colleges, while others may bring decades of prior work and learning experience. The program is interdisciplinary and flexible and faculty advisors work closely with students on designing and carrying out their degree plans.


Nature and Scope
The program currently enrolls 157 adult students, served by seven faculty advisors in addition to the director plus several associate and adjunct faculty and four administrative staff.

Essential Functions/Accountabilities

Leadership: The successful candidate is expected to be an energetic advocate for collaborative, multicultural and experiential learning and teaching. Informed by this educational perspective, the Director provides leadership for the development, improvement and assessment of the program. The Director works with faculty and staff to assure alignment of their work with program and University aims. Additional leadership responsibilities include participating as an active member of the campus-wide governance structure, as a member of the campus Academic Council, Planning and Budget Council, Faculty Assembly and Academic Dean's Team, as one of the principal deputies to the Academic Dean.

Outreach: The Director is responsible for bringing the program's unique content and learning process to a larger constituency through leading outreach initiatives that provide community-learning opportunities, promoting vibrant partnerships and increasing visibility and excitement for the program and for the University.

Planning: The Director, in collaboration with program faculty and staff, is responsible for articulating the vision, establishing priorities, developing a staffing plan, annual budget, student outcomes assessment and working with the Directors of Enrollment Services and Integrated Marketing to increase regional visibility and student enrollment.

Management: The Director is responsible for managing the program's operations including academic administration, staff support and budget. In collaboration with the faculty and staff, the Director handles program-level student grievances and facilities conflict resolution.


Qualifications
  1. Minimum of a doctoral or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  2. Prior faculty leadership experience, preferably at the level of department chair or above.
  3. Minimum of three years of college teaching experience in the liberal arts, preferably with an adult student population.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and multicultural learning.
  5. Understanding of and experience with interdisciplinary and experiential learning models.
  6. Demonstrated commmitment to academic excellence.
  7. Demonstrated scholarly or professional competence in some field within the liberal arts, broadly definied - as indicated, for example, by a record of publication, program development and leadership and/or similar activity.
  8. Zest for and demonstrated ability to work in a participatory learning community with a diverse workforce.
  9. Excellent organizational, management, written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical and Mental Demands
  1. Periods of stress due to level, variety, nature and volume of work.
  2. Periods of work when 45 to 50 hours per week or more may be necessary.
